Thanks everyone for the advice on identifying various types of beardless
irises by looking at the foliage. I was particularly interested in
segregating Japanese from Louisianas. I think that the distinguishing
feature of the ridge running down the middle of the Japanese iris leaves is
the easiest i.d. process for me. It also means I don't have to sacrifice
leaves or portions of leaves to look for spots, lines, stripes, plaids,
paisleys, checks, polka-dots, etc. :) Frankly, I'm beginning to run low on
leaves to pluck off of my named Japanese and LA's for comparison. I've
learned my lesson well and will never again remove a label from any plant.
