Re: Iris orientalis - sources?

I did not see any reponses to your message re Iris orientalis, so I saved
your message. Iris orientalis is a species of the Spuriae Series. I believe
that Melody Wilhoit lists this iris (price list $1.00: Route 1, Box 141,
Kansas, IL 61933), or at least she used to. (At one time Iris sanguinea was
known as "Iris orientalis", and some botanic gardens have not corrected this
confusion. I have received seeds from botanic gardens labelled Iris
orientalis and they turned out to be I. sanguinea...so if you grown this iris
from seed be sure of your sources).

In some areas of California Iris spuria are sold as cut flowers during bloom
season (April in most areas of coastal California). But many of the Spuriae
look a great deal like Dutch iris (which are bulbous not rhizomous
plants)...even "experts" have trouble identifying which is which when
presented as cut flowers. Of course, Dutch irises are the irises one usually
finds in florists shops (because they are so easy to force out of season!)
