Elly: Your best bet is to NOT cut the iris back until you have had a KILLING
frost, i.e. when the dahlia leaves and the canna leaves turn black.  That is
when the iris leaves will flop onto the ground and become susceptible to many
soil borne diseases. In most instances cutting back the foliage will NOT rid
the plant of borer eggs.  The borer moth is an opportunist and will lay its
eggs on any dead debris (leaves, etc) in the iris beds or vicinity. This is
probably going to raise a big discussion on the borer but I stand by my
statement based on experience.
