I have seen them eat live as well as dead tissue.  They usually eat young
seedlings here or newly sprouted things especially if in the shade. Young
daylilies for one.  Hostas another ( Can't grow one they like them so much).
Sometimes iris seedlings root leaf & all.

Are you sure they were eating live tissue and not just cleaning out what
was dead already?
