Subject: Iris Barbudo - A Double Take
Yesteday at the Wal-Mart Super Store in Grenada, MS, I was
in the garden department looking for Sam's Magic Earth, a potting
mix I like to use. On my way into the garden department, I saw a
display of iris rhizomes for sale bearing the usual Better Homes
and Gardens tag. B & G has been the source for so many
misnamed irises over the past few years. I was checking the
packages to see what Wal-Mart was offering this year and to look
at the condition of the contents. A sales clerk approached and told
me that there was a larger display of irises at the other end of the
garden center. So, there I went.
I got to the display and saw the packages labeled 'Iris
Barbudo.' I chuckled and said to myself, "What in the heck are
these? I never heard of Iris Barbudo.' Is this a species? Upon
closer investigation and thinking a minute, barbudo is 'bearded' in
Spanish. Sure enough, I turned over the package and there were
planting instructions in English and Spanish. So, if you find these
in your local Wal-Mart, don't be confused like I was, at first.
These rhizomes were greener and, therefore, much fresher than
those with the B & G label. It turns out that these rhizomes are
packed by VanZyverden of Meridian, MS. I bought a package
containing two fat rhizomes of TITAN'S GLORY just to see if they
turn out to be the real McCoy. More on this next year!
