I start in pots and leave them there until the ground is wet. So I will
move mine to the garden even while it is middle of summer if we have
saturating rains AFTER new roots are sticking out the bottoms of the
pots. I set a few pots from our June plant sale out in July, and have
only hauled the hose out to water them once since. They look great in
spite of the drought and temps in the upper 90s all summer, full sun,
gravel soil. Once the soil is moist and cool for the winter, I will
plant directly in the ground. Otherwise, I pot till the roots are
showing.
I've set newly acquired stuff out without potting as late as November,
but don't recommend it. Frost heaving is usually not much of a problem
here and is probably not a problem for you either. But they need roots
for other purposes and once the ground is cold, growth is much slower.
