Isn't it true that in hot/dry climates that you should plant the arils
below the soil's surface to give them a bit of protection?  I thought I
remember reading that somewhere.  I'm not sure if that's the proper
technique, but that's what I did in my new hillside planting.  All my arils
are at least 1/2" to 1" below the surface.  They are in a really hot/dry
sandy spot in my yard.  I hope it works!
