When I was growing up in California, we had
'fire-ants'--red ones, which did damage to some of my Mother's favorite
bushes--by building their nest just under the crown-just underground--which
would then be pushed out of the soil- to freeze in the winter--or to bury the
crown with too much dirt, smothering it--
these red ants were rather ferocious--and their
bite was bad!! Stung, and the area was red and raised for several
days--
Thank heavens they are not here in Montana--but we
do have flying ants here--last week at the club garden, there were two areas of
ants--each about 3 feet long--(the area, not the ants) covered with ants and
flying ants--but by the time I got the Diazanone and went back to feed it to
them, the area was mostly clear--but the rhizomes are in terrible condition
where they were--
The ants here also burrow beneath the cement--and
suddenly, when a heavy car runs over the area where it has been undermined,
whomp--and the cement cracks and some drops lower than the surrounding area--so
I do try to do away with the ant nests in areas where they might damage
plants/driveway/etc.
I use Diazanone crystals--safer to use when there
are animals-dogs,cats,raccoons around--and the crystals will last for many
days--through several cycles of sprinklers--where the liquid spray will be
washed off by the overhead water--
Many times one can use a help with keeping their
Iris healthy and happy--and using something sparingly--to get rid of pests--is a
good gardening practice--I think--Carryl in western Montana--where winter
arrives tomorrow!!
