Yes, Donald, TOBACCO ROAD was known from the outset to be a very weak
grower, and the trait passed to many descendants.
Moon River is on my blakc list. It gives lovely seedlings, but very poor
growth characteristics for this climate. I really cannot recommend a brown
for this climate, and I have tried many.
I should have tried to answer Linda's letter. I know JUNE MEREDITH was a
pretty good grower and much admired for its color. PALOMINO was a real
color break, and did rather well in Canada. FLEETA did fairly well there.
CHINESE CORAL was noted for color, but not for growth habits wherever I was
then living. Likewise SAFFRON ROBE. LIMELIGHT was grown rather well in
Canada and in most areas. MIXED EMOTIONS produced just that for many
growers, and I would be happy but surprised if it does well for you. INCA
CHIEF was a real glory in its time, and a color I adore. I would guess that
it will not be one of your hardiest, Linda, but well worth a struggle, at
least from the historic point of view. SPANISH PEAKS was a classic white
that most growers had, years ago. NEW SNOW was a better grower in Canada,
but SP was moderately good. DENVER MINT I saw at
Memphis, and just had to have. Lovely flower, but not a 100% grower. I do
not know PONDEROSA. LLOYD ZURBRIGG in Durham NC
