That was meant only in jest, and I meant also to add:
It has been discovered that in Australia, many bites blamed on white tail 
spiders are misdiagnoses, and are actually due to other insects. Often 
diagnoses are made on the basis of what the person 'thought' might have 
bitten him. This could be the case, in your situation, but it would be 
difficult to know without knowing ALL the details. Perhaps you struck the 
one-in-a-zillion tough jawed spider. Perhaps your skin was already broken, 
so that the venom could gain access without the spider penetrating the 
dermal layer.
Perhaps you tripped as you felt the spider on your ankle, and the swelling 
was a result of a pulled muscle?
Of course I can't possibly explain your case, but there may be a perfectly 
valid explanation and Bill may be perfectly correct.
