earthworms

I piled some almost finished compost on top of the leaf
mulch in my veggie garden in which to plant some soybean
seeds. There were quite a few worms in it. After I planted
the seeds I watered to moisten it before putting leaves on
top of that and I noticed that some of the worms were on top
and looked dead. Did I kill them with the water? Should I
not have watered?
