Re: Ipomea indica vine (Blue dawn flower) seeds?

Maura -

I have never found seeds on our Ipomoea indicas in this area either. I
wonder if it is self-sterile and you need more than one clone to get
seeds. This guy seems rampant enough with out seeds (thank heaven no seed
seems to be produced!).

One of the most dramatic local invasions of this plant was many years ago
in Berkeley. A very old Victorian house sat neglected on a large lot near
downtown. I used to pass it frequently walking in to work. The whole
garden was sadly neglected and weedy, but around the house this morning
glory had gotten hold and was scrambling up the sides. It had covered all
sides of the paint peeling structure, climbing to the very top of its 3
story height. The green leaves seemed to have taken over for the siding
and shingles, providing an ordered layering of foliage with a window
peeking out here and there. When in flower, the whole was a blaze of
blue-violet & red-violet (faded flowers) and was truly a sight to
behold. Apparently there was an old gentleman still living in this house
at the time - I would see lights on a night and an occasional silhouette in
a window. I loved this house and vine and am completely surprised that I
never took a photo of it! One day, years after the man died, someone was
finally able to buy the property and renovate the house. It now has good
paint, a charming garden, and NO MORNING GLORIES. It is also unremarkable
and easily blends into the surrounding neighborhood.

Regards,
Sean O.
