I recently asked the group if anyone has had experience with Japanese honeysuckle vines, known in the vernacular here as "yaarot yapaniot". The botanical name is "Lonicera Japonica". Anyone out there have any experience with them? Perhaps in a windy area?Yoel,This vine or groundcover is quite similar to the Ipomoea which was under discussion a week or so ago. It is a rampant grower which can quickly overtake less vigorous plants, and will need either lots of room to be allowed to do it's thing, or regular pruning to keep it within bounds. The variety 'Halliana' is probably one of the most commonly available in California, and it will take a large variety of climates, from USDA 4/5, to 11, and maybe colder winter climates as well. I know that it is also quite commonly planted in the southeastern United States where it freezes, and will also grow in hot desert climates such as here in Riyadh, where it of course needs supplemental irrigation year round. It also looks best with some shade in desert climates. Along the more humid and foggy coastal areas of California, it can escape and grow with natural winter rainfall alone, and take over an empty lot with no care at all. The fragrance is! q! ! uite nice, but it is not a plant for small confined areas. If you have an eyesore to cover, it is another good choice to consider. I personally find the Giant Burmese Honeysuckle, (Lonicera hildebrandiana) a more interesting vine, but then again I am always attracted to more tropical looking species within a genus. Hope this helps.
