was it lavender that clears murky water?

A while back someone on this list mentioned that an herb of some kind could be suspended in cheesecloth to help keep the water clear in a water feature.  I've already forgotten what plant it was--can someone refresh my memory?  And would the algacidal effect also be bad for fish?  In this case, common mosquito-fish and goldfish.
