Hi Loretta,
I do believe any kind is OK. I don't think I would put it
in a tropical fish tank, but you may be braver than I.

that was the one-page article in the Royal Horticultural Society's
magazine (The Gardener) that got me to try this. It's mostly about
using barley straw, with lavender as an alternative. (But since I
grow lots of lavender and no barley, ...)
That site also contains links to British firms who sell barley
straw (and lavender) pond pads, where you can read more about
the subject.
