Title: Fwd: Re: Street trees
If you have an unwanted list, put Modesto Ash on it. When in the right place it may be fine, but here it wind shapes badly and I would like to cut them all out.
And, with regard to pruning. I do not allow any tree to have a branch below about seven feet. I want light to get under the tree and I want to be able to walk under it. If this pruning is done when young the tree responds well. Go out every year and take off the bottom round of branches. After about five years it will be a beautiful tree that you can enjoy!

I also have experience with Robinia idahoensis. It was chosen about 12 years ago as the street down for our busy downtown main street here in Mountain View. It--as opposed to the Ash--benefits greatly from regular and heavy pruning. In about year 3-4 city arborists must have cut back about 60% of the branches -- I was quite shocked. But the trees benefited from this heavy pruning. It helps them present a light and airy appearance which gives some shade to pedestrians but also allows wind to pass through easily so they bend with it and don't snap off brittle ends. After that one heavy pruning they get minor pruning at the end of each summer. They were a good choice -- adding a great presence and height but not bulk. The pink blooms are a bonus.

Thank you for this. It does seem to be a rather undisciplined child!! I will give a copy of your letter to my arborist and tell him to "have at it!"
*****--------------Tababuia chrysotricha

I'm sorry if I gave you the wrong spelling. It's Tabebuia!
