Arbutus unedo can also get thrips in drier areas, and
takes awhile to reach tree size. Erythrina
crista-galli is beautiful, but it may have trouble
reaching tree size in your climate, is deciduous, and
would drop flowers as much as the Arbutus would drop
fruits. But you'd have a lovely bloom, intriguing
form, and it would probably be the only one on your
block.
