Hi Loren --
That sounds like a great setup with the styrofoam boxes. Maybe I'll check
with my neighborhood fish market :-). I'm used to dealing with bulbs in
pots, keeping them dry-but-not-bone-dry, and keeping their roots cool in
the summer and all, so that won't be a problem. What puzzles me is why
these delphiniums are going dormant now, in what most plants seem to
consider our best growing season. Are you saying that summer is their
normal dormant period (at this stage of growth)? If so, I can easily
believe that having been in a flat on sun-warmed concrete, as they were,
let them think it's now later in the spring than it is. OTOH, their seeds
do ripen early, so perhaps they could be like Moira's lilies, and think
that three months after germination = winter? In which case I would try
putting half of them in the fridge for three months, taking them out in
August and keeping them warm through the winter so they can get a head
start on the snails for next spring. One of my main reasons for growing
these puppies is hoped-for snail resistance :-).
Thanks again,
-- Susannah
