David Feix said he thought the Daphne tangutica scent might be temperature-related, and I think he is right. The couple of days when the scent filled the entire house were record-breaking days with temperatures we normally get only in the summer (24 C!) (about 75 F). Now we are back to our usual spring temperatures - well, actually, it is often our winter temperature too - 11 C. (around 50 F). The daphne scent can be smelled only in the two rooms closest to the plant, which is what normally happens every year.
