Many plants (Brugmannsias, Clematis Armandii, Petunias, to name a few) hold their fragrance close during the day and only really release their scent in the evening. In the case of the Brugmannsias and Petunias, I believe it is because they are pollinated by moths. I'm not sure why it should be so with Clematis Armandii.
