Possibly Bauhinia -- the leaves are very distinctive:

I should say almost certainly Bauhinia. No other tree I know has leaves which so well fit this description.

There are many species of this attractive ornamental tree Christopher. If you would like to try for an identifcation of the species I would be happy if you could send me a picture/pictures as you suggest. We do have Broadband so receiving pics presents no difficulty.

Moira
can anyone help me by identifying a flowering tree
for me?

in nicosia in cyprus, the are at present avenues of
trees (about 20ft in
height) around the city flowering with spectacular
two tone dark and light pink
blooms. the blooms do not look to be related to
cherry or almond family,
but are more "complex" in nature. the leaves are
ovoid with a notch in the
base dividing them symettrically into two halves
(actually resembling the wings
of a butterfly). i do have pictures that i could e
mail. if you can
identify this tree from my description, any idea on
cultivation - and in particular
soil types.

many thanks
