re: getting rid of lawn

Once your lawn is completely dead, be sure to till it into your soil or use
it somewhere else. The soil around the roots of turf grasses may be the
finest in your garden. Don't throw it away.

Your first post mentioned that you didn't want to dig up the turf. I did
this many years ago with a Bermuda lawn in San Diego. I removed the top few
inches, dug 1.5-2 feet down, and buried the turf, root side up, about 1 foot
down. I didn't get any resprouting.

BTW, per the advice you mention above...

I thought that one covered soil with clear plastic and watered the soil and
then let the hot sun sterilize the soil. Wouldn't this kill the weed seeds,
too? (As well as the earthworms?) It sounds like you're planning to use dark
plastic.
