Re: palms and common names

ive seen an illustration of Cordilyne australis, and its rather a beautiful
plant. It looks ver much like our native desert dwelling joshua trees, but
with droopier foliage and no dead leaves all over the trunk. I could imagine
it in a desert type garden or even a tropical garden as well. Of all the
palms that are suited to here and rather uncommon is the queen palm ( latin
is too complicated for me to remember) But the leaves are very feathery, the
trunk is stright, smooth and thin, and when mature the plant gives a very
tropical feel to any situation. Almost like a coconut palm would but since we
cant grow those, the queen palm suffices. Date palms which are rather easy to
come by and very common i dont like very much. I guess ive seen so many of
them. I do like fan palms and theres some nice ones all over my city. Most
are young and when old will make a beautiful skyline. I suppose the Date
palms will too when old and very tall but most are less than thirty feet
high. They can get to a hundred if the conditions are good. I do love palms
when theyre lit from below, gives a pretty effect to them.
