These seem to be erratic in their fruiting. I was interested
in Betty-Ann's comments. I don't know how they're pollinated.
I have two which bear prolifically some years. This year there
is not a single fruit on either of them. I suspect it's possums
though in my case, the wretched creatures are so destructive.
Feijoa fruit have such a strong smell. They are like guavas in
that way, a few of them will scent a whole room. I find their
smell rather unpleasant, a bit like air freshener. However they
make a beautiful clear garnet-coloured jelly.
The autumn foliage is beautifully coloured at the moment. Some
of the streets are planted with a variety of ash called 'Claret'
which turn the most beautiful deep purply-red. However as we
almost never get sub-zero temperatures here on the Adelaide plains,
the autumn colours are not as spectacular as they are in the
Adelaide hills. I have a pin oak (Quercus palustris) in my garden
which makes an awful mess with falling leaves for weeks and weeks
without the saving grace of much colour!
