May I suggest the Cal Poly campus? The drought-tolerant gardens are near
the architecture building. Even in December they were worth seeing.
My traveling garden guide for California is California Public Gardens, A
Visitor's Guide. There they also recommend the perennial plantings that
extend over 300 yards along a lawn near the Business Administration Building.
I'm sorry to have missed that. Eric Sigg's guide also lists the Dalidet
Adobe in San Luis, though I am unacquainted with the gardens. Finally, the
Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is also listed as noteworthy. If you visit
any of these gardens, please post your impressions.

The ISBN# for Sigg's book is 0-945465-56-4. I do not know if it is still in
print. Publisher is John Muir Publications, P.O. Box 613, Santa Fe, NM
87504. We have found many stellar gardens in our travels about California.

Happy (gardening) trails!

Sue Martin
