Dear Nick,
I'd like to add to Barry and Rachel's remarks, by pointing out the the
California buckeye is the first deciduous tree to leaf out after the
winter rains, and the first to lose its leaves (usually sometime in early
August here in central California) when it goes into summer (drought)
dormancy. My understanding of this is that this response is caused by the
adaptation of a plant coming from moister conditions in previous ages to
the dryer climate in California today.
