Julia Pfeiffer State park ( was Re: California Freeeway "wildflowers")

the biggest pasts so far in the wild creeks here are Senicio mikinoides
( Sp?) and Naturtium. The nasturtium while being pretty grow all year
long here and seed very readily. They love the creeks and can blanket
small canyons. The Senicio on the other hand blanket EVERYTHING. While
at Julia Pfeiffer State Park in Big Sur, working to help eradicate it
among stinging nettles ( was VERY cautious not to get stung by it) and
the poison oak ( im not allergic but i rode there with people in a van)
, we saw how much the senicio covered the trees. They said it can
strangle the trees in their vines. Its almost as bad as kudzu is in the
South East. It also has runners so we had to be careful to get out as
much as we could. THe runners were easy to spot because they were an
interesting shade of violet. Luckily this was during our dry season
here in California and the sandy bank they were growing in was loose,
dry sand.
We did however see some beautiful natives, including the
wondrous and huge Woodwardia fimbriata ( Giant Chain Fern) who were at
least 6 - 8 feet high. They can get to 9 feet high. Some very nice Big
Leaf Maples ( Acer macrophyllum), and some very nice and huge specimens
of Platanus racemosa, who had these huge leaves on them. It was
wonderful seeing these natives. though i have to admit even the poison
oak was getting to have some nice red leaves too.
We also saw the Dairy field, where supposedly Monterey Jack
Cheese was invented in a barn there that no longer exists. It was nice
since they were planting some native trees to turn it back into the
wooded land it used to be and to keep the weedy annual grasses out. I
didnt see any wild flowers since it was the end of summer and most of
the annual flowers had already stopped blooming. Although the Little
Sur Creek was nice ( and clear and cold!).
