Re: ideas for a newspaper article

Sean, walking tours of areas of special interest-the Clark Kerr campus at
UC (formerly the California Blind and Deaf schools) has a wonderful and
diverse assortment of mature trees. A self guided tour of trees of the
Berkeley campus is good too, now that the book about them is out of print.
Mills College has a good collection of trees, and their small botanic
garden, started under Howard McMinn used to be interesting (I haven't seen
it recently). I have also walked around Lake Merritt, making lists of the
plants there. Maybe the history and development of the roof gardens of
Oakland Museum and the Kaiser Center would interest people. All of these
places helped me learn about plants in garden settings, were nice walks,
and took me to East Bay gardens other than botanic gardens (which can also
be included in this list) where I could learn about plants.
