I'm not sure what this list-serve's ground rules are for forwarding virus
alerts (I suppose too many would be a drag), but this latest alert,
forwarded to me through the National Writer's Union, seemed worthy of
distribution. Deb F.

>There is a time-bomb virus known as CIH (AKA "Chernobyl") that is set to
>detonate on infected Windows 95 or Windows 98 systems when they are powered
>up on Monday (April 26th, the anniversary of the Chernobyl meltdown). The
>virus wipes all data off your hard drive and then attacks your computer's
>BIOS which is a key part of the internal operating system. In worst case,
>that you might have to take your system into a repair shop to have the BIOS
>chip replaced. Under some circumstances the virus can be transmitted via
>email and then lies dormant until April 26th, so infections are possible.

>They claim that anti-virus software will check and clear this virus, but
>ONLY if you have recently updated its virus definitions. So, I recommend
>the following four-step program:
>
>1. Back up your key data before next monday.
>
>2. If you don't have anti-virus software, get some.
>
>3. Update your virus software's definitions via modem (this has to be done
>even with newly purchased packages).
>
>4. Run the anti-virus program.

I've visited the CERT site and it appears to confirm
Bruce's validation.
