Several yards around
here have B. alternifolia standards, and they are rather attractive. That
has made me have a desire to plant one. On three occasions, I have
purchased a plant, intending to put it in. Then, I've had trouble finding
a place for it. I actually planted it one of the three
times. On each of those occasions, either the first year or
second, the alternifolia dissappeared and was replaced by B. davidii. My
current one bloomed once this spring, with alternifolia flowers, and is blooming
again now with 18" white spikes, that are doubtlessly
davidii!
The obvious question
is: are alternifolia plants usually a scion on a davidii rootstock?
Alternately (NPI), Is alternifolia a weak, unstable sport of
davidii?
I have davidii and
weyeriana hybrids that are doing just fine, but I can't figure out the
alternifolia thing.
