Robert - Nope, it's a real critter. But it is more than a touch
ornery/miffy/pain in the whatever. E.g., I have the alternative
alternifolia non-performance - viz., there the brute is, lovingly
trained as, yea, verily, a standard, and with undeniably B.
alternifolia foliage - but flowers? of *any* sort?? Ha among the
buddlejas, sez I. Nary a one. Meanwhile, of course, in every other
garden I know which grows it, the darn thing is smothered, whether
allowed to flop, or ramp, or by some such sadist as myself or even
yourself trained as a standard.
PS Delighted to see Sean's comment about B. madagasc. smelling like
old socks - consoles me for not being able to make it survive here,
let alone flower...
