Well, the only Jasmine I grow is J. polyanthum. It's fast growing for me
(i have it on a wire trellis strung across one side of the porch), and
does quite well despite the um.....neglect it sometimes gets. I dont have
to do a lot of pruning, because i tend to just push the vines back among
the rest of the plant, but I have done some pruning, mostly to get it to
branch out. I've found also that it becomes fairly drought tolerant after
a while (in the spot it's in, i water it maybe once a week at most,
sometimes two weeks). It also grows in plain sand and seems to thrive
there. I did cut it back earlier this year when we repainted the porch
(originally the trellis stretched from the roof of the porch to the
ground, and I had to take the trellis down). I gave it a hard pruning, and
it responded well. Now it's flowering here and there.

I pronounce it jas-meen-um, with the accent on the middle syllable.
