I have grown J. azoricum in the San Francisco area. It is evergreen here,
and although it is reputed to have nicely scented flowers, it has not
flowered after several years growth. It will grow into trees, but left in
an open area, appears to have arching canes - the stems are shiny green and
smooth, and are quite rigid when about 7 mm in diameter.
I also planted about 8 years ago, J.odoratissimum. Contrary to its name,
the very small yellow flowers have never shown the slightest hint of scent.
Perhaps you (or someone else in LA) could answer a question I have been
wondering about: at the Huntngton Gardens, a few years ago, I found a
jasmine hedge, about 3 feet high, with a very strong scent, below one of
the major buildings - I believe the main library building. Does anyone know
what it is? It was of course not labeled with a name (one of my pet
annoyances with botanic gardens).
