Nan, in the nursery where I work, we often cut back gaura that starts looking 
*not prime* for one reason or another.  We are pretty brutal, hacking them 
back in their containers to within about 2" of soil level.  They are tough as 
old boots -- give them a little feed & lots of sun and they will bounce back 
in no time, usually fuller & showier than before.
