My book says:
"Elaeocarpus:
This group of small to large trees, confined chiefly to rainforest areas
and moist gullies, is found in all States except Western Australia and
South Australia. These trees have simple, often toothed leaves and
bell-shaped flowers of white or pink. The flowers are followed by
coloured berries. These trees make attractive specimen trees in
protected areas free from frost but are slow in their early growth.
Flowers spring. Berries autumn and winter."
The illustration shows E. reticulatus which has rather attractive white
flowers, fringed. Sounds as though it should do well in San Francisco.
