This has turned out to be a really
informative (for me) exchange but I
hope not too far from plant topics. But just to respond to Anthony; my
good old OED now tells me that gopher-wood (their hyphen) is applied
in the U.S. to the yellow-wood (Cladrastis tinctoria). However, Thomas
Aird (Poetical Works pub.1856) wrote: "There to a pillar of black
gopher-wood/ Brought near, a fettered prisoner he stood"
Yellow or black then? Or perhaps C.
tinctoria is in fact black and it's
called yellow-wood just to confuse us.
Actually, I would go for (go-fer?)
Ryan's theory about a possible scribal
error. Anthony likes these esoteric scrambles after dubious
translations, don't you Anthony?
