Moles eat insects - worms. They can be destructive, but they do nothing
to
a garden like a gopher, having lived - uh, gardened - with both; a
gopher is
a vegetarian. On one memorable occasion, I was working in my garden and
heard a rustling behind me to turn around and watch a prized artichoke
plant, about one meter high with a "wingspan" of about 2½ m, shaking
violently from root to shoot and then suddenly drop about 18" (½
meter?).
Hi all,
While the European (and American) moles are insectivores, there /are/
species of mole that are vegetrians, and I have heard that one of these
species does live in parts of the USA, although I have no details.
The moles we knew in East Africa were definitely vegetarian, and my
"introduction" to them was almost exactly the same experience as David's
- I saw an "edible canna" start to shake violently and then the entire
plant disappear underground with a "whoosh"!!
