Erosion control plants

I'd like some advice for planting on an irrigated, very steep hill in the
Hollywood Hills. Once established, we'd like to restrict the irrigation.
Does anyone have suggestions for plant material that will provide a
thick mat of roots to hold the topsoil of the hillside?

The old Sunset Western Garden books used to include a list of plants for hillsides. I keep all my old books, because the new versions don't just add information, they also delete information I want.

Here are plants they suggest for hillside erosion control. I am not considering watering requirements. You will also need to check to see if these are more rampant than you want. I left off a few that I know have been spreading into the wild, like pampas grass and Spanish broom, but there are others that may no longer be considered acceptable, like ivy.

I'm assuming Hollywood Hills is near Beverly Hills, which is Sunset zone 23.
