I'm curious, Deborah...
Did you have a control patch this year along with the
red foil? That is, did you grow some tomatoes WITHOUT
the foil, the usual way? If so, did you see a
difference?
I'm not convinced that red foil is significantly
better than, say, using black plastic to warm up the
soil or simply waiting later in the season to put out
plants.
My non-scientific observation down here (in Santa
Maria, the capital of cool summer weather), we had a
bumper crop of tomatoes this year in home gardens.
With or without red foil or just about anything else
extra.
The difference here was that we had an incredibly warm
late winter-early spring and, until just recently,
nights that were not all that cold and damp. And
maybe more bees.
