Dear All,

I was recently asked by a friend in Corvalis, Oregon (which is in the
Willamette valley south of Portland) if there were any Salvias that I knew
of that might do well in the area. Being a California guy in a zone where it
almost never freezes, I am at a loss for ideas. Any suggestions?

I live near Corvallis (within 30 mi) and am growing S. patens 'Cambridge Blue' and other S. patens ,  S. guaranitica,  S . apiana,  S. forskaohlei,
Salvia uliginosa and others I can't at the moment recall.  This is USDA 8, Sunset  6 so these and many others will survive here,  with perhaps a little extra attention to good mulching in the fall.  Bill Fletcher, a salvia afficionado near Portland,  winters over many of his under cover but lists some that have proven hardy for him in our  zone:

S. barrelierii -  ZONE 8

S. chinensis  -   Zone 8

S. dolicantha - ZONE 8

S. evansiana . ZONE 8 (7?)

S. forskaohlei -  ZONE 7

S. gesneraeflora 'Tequila' -   ZONE 9 (mild Zone 8

S. greggii 'Raspberry Ripple '  ZONE 8

S. henryi -   ZONE 8 -

S. microphylla 'Hoja Grande' -  ZONE 8

S. repens repens -   ZONE 8

S. roemeriana -  Zone 8

S. sclarea  ZONE - 5

S. staminea -  ZONE - 5

S. tingitana withstood overnight temperatures to 18F. ZONE 8-9

S. viscosa - Zone 6 maybe lower.
