plant hardiness

The discussion about Oleander hardiness was interesting. I agree that they
love heat, but I would like to confirm the English gentleman's observation
that sometimes the combination of rich, water-retentive soil can kill off
plants in winter even if it is not too cold for them.  This last winter in
coastal Los Angeles wasn't particularly cold, but I lost three of my
favorite Pelargoniums that I had had for years.
