Pels are another story: they most certainly need good drainage, and I
have found that those I grow, which are in pots, don't want too much
water even in summer. There seems to be a tricky soil porosity ratio of
water to air that is required to keep bacterial rots at bay.

The discussion about Oleander hardiness was interesting. I agree that

love heat, but I would like to confirm the English gentleman's
observation
that sometimes the combination of rich, water-retentive soil can kill
off
plants in winter even if it is not too cold for them. This last winter
in
coastal Los Angeles wasn't particularly cold, but I lost three of my
favorite Pelargoniums that I had had for years.
