Alexandre: Above is a link to a list of trees generated by the wonder website Selectree, which is run by CalPoly, San Luis Obispo. I guessed at your climate zones, but you can go backward on the site to the beginning and put in as much or as little criteria as you want. Only thing I would consider from Sean’s list: my experience is that Crape myrtle will be a long time in providing any shade to speak of, and the Gleditsia and Pawlonia may both end up growing over your roof. Also the Melia can get up to 15-m tall with a wide spread. Most importantly: you will have to go with what you can find! Karrie Reid

I'm trying to choose a tree for my garden. I'm looking for a tree that doesn't get too big (it will be planted near the house - 3-4 meters from the house) and that will guive us some shade during the hot summer months. My first choice would be Tipuana tipu, bt I think that with time it will get too big. I'm now thinking about Albizia julibrissin. Can anyone sugest any other choices that might work?
