You have had a strange experience. I will check with the UCSC Arboretum where I have been a volunteer for years. All of mine have done fine in my own garden for ages. They get no water or fertilizer from me.
And I have really hostile soil for some of them. Will get back to you on the UCSC idea. bill grant
