Fwd: Leucadendrons

Hi Nan

I just checked the condition of ours:
  • Leucadendron 'Ebony' -- just planted
  • Leucadendron 'Jester' -- okay
  • Leucadendron 'Jubilee' -- okay
  • Leucadendron discolor ‘Pom Pom’ -- just planted
  • Leucadendron galpinii -- looks weak but it's getting covered up by another plant
  • Leucadendron laureolum x salignum 'Safari Sunset' -- one planted 2 1/2 years ago began looking a little yellowish last week with some leaf drop but only in comparison to the other two flanking it; a 4th elsewhere in the garden is okay
  • Leucadendron salignum 'Chief' -- okay
  • Leucadendron salignum 'Winter Red' -- okay
DG, 700' elevation, gentle south-facing slope, limited overhead water, no fertilizer, Sunset zone 23/USDA zone 10a, 25 or so miles north of you

So this is interesting…. here in San Diego area, the last three or four weeks have been hot.  Really hot.  And humid.  Temps in the 90s, even by the beach.  In my garden and in two gardens I installed over the last several months, I've lost leucadendrons.  Not the same leucadendrons, different species and cultivars, but almost all the leucadendrons just fizzled, including one in my garden that I've had for at least eight years.  The Leucospermums are fine as are the proteas, grevilleas, and melaleucas.  Why just the leucadendrons?

All were drip irrigated, all in well draining soil, none fertilized with high P fertilizer (mostly unfertilized but those most recently planted do get a little fertilizer at planting).

Any thoughts?

Nan
