While weeding near the foundation of a clients house, I noticed a
flower head of Romneya coulteri comming out of a vent. It seemed
unusual because the stand of R.coulteri is on the other side of the
house. I thought the plant might have grown under the deck, but upon
examination it had grown behind a partition in the crawl area (no light
at all), and it looked like long pieces of white rope. There were
hundreds of stems all crawling toward the little bitty light from the
vent. It would have been funny if my client hadn't asked me to dig them
out. If I could reduce my height to 3'and not worry about brown recluse
spiders it might have been possible.
Does anyone know why the plant would head under the house? The clump
keeps getting smaller each year. It's position is southwest, with
plenty of room for growth. It was planted six years ago, and was once
quite magnificent.
I really enjoy this group and look forward to an answer.
Thanks Lily
