Hello All,
I live in a townhouse/condo; my neighbor's and my front walkway is
separated by a planting area that's a rectangle created by sidewalk, 7
ft. long and a little over 3 ft. wide.
An old shrub was removed and now we need to decide what to plant there.
It's a problem spot. During winter rains, a rain chain and
downspout keep the area SATURATED. The gardener said he'd try digging
in a drainage pipe to reduce that problem, but it will still be a wet
spot. It gets a fair amount of sun in the winter, being on the western
side, but in summer, large deciduous trees shade the area fairly well.
There's a short period of direct sun, but mostly dappled. So it's a
typical medit. spot, wet in winter, but hot and dry, though shaded, in
summer.
We'd like something attractive & evergreen for year-round interest,
but with spring or summer bloom; the longer the better. It needs to be
sort of mounding, up to 3 ft. high, and not too sprawling or unruly. We
don't want anything as formal as a boxwood hedge, and we don't want
something that's continually draped in spider webs. We were thinking
about Hebe buxifolia, perhaps with small flowering perennial
underplantings. What do you think? What has worked well for you?
Thanx for your suggestions! Wendy
