Re: Regional Gardening

wow, that sounds like its a beautiful garden :). TO me Regional
gardening is gardening using plants suited to that environment (native
or not) and reflecting the cultural history of the area.

Where i live, Marina Calif. the plants that are suited to here would be
your usual mediterranean / drought tolerant/ native plants. Since i
live on a dune/ chapparal area (i live close to oak woodlands and close
to dune communities) i would (if i were doing a regional garden) use
plants that can tolerate straight sand for soil, and grow on rainfall
(and sometimes watering if they get wilty or dry). The type of garden
could be a spanish garden, since Monterey, which is only 10 miles away
was the former Capital of Alta California under spanish/ mexican rule.
Native plants that i could use are: Quercus Agrifolia, the native yucca
(our lords candle) this plant called "Lizards tail" (is a nice low
growing plant) some of the native mints, sages, manzanitas, and
ceanothus. I could even use coyote bush ( Baccharis, which i saw one
that some deer had basically pruned so it was "sculpted" ), Fuchsia
flowered gooseberry (they have seedy fruits), and the native currant (i
think thats it = )), pink sand verbena, the various dudleya sp. and
chamise. Non native plants that are possible are different yuccas,
agave, and cacti, acacias, Albizzia (which i find to be spectacular in
bloom, seen all over in Santa Cruz). Even Palms, such as Phoenix sp.,
Syagrus sp, and possibly Archontophoenix (which in my garden seems to
have survived the winter unscathed, although if in a spanish garden
wouldn't look quite right :)), washingtonia sp, and many more.
all these are off the top of my head..... =)
