catching up

8/3/99
Dear Sean & medit plant friends around the world-
I am FINALLY getting caught up on medit plant listings after months of
filing messages away - I had a super busy June with both a conference I was
in charge of and MOVING. Sean - I ditto Ahronya's comment below.
I had truly thought maybe it was time to unsubscribe to medit plants - then
read the whole thread about Gary Matson's death, the virtual garden and all
the lovely, meaningful messages. How can I possibly leave a list with such
heart? (I can't).

I have turned the corner from complaining about having to move (what? and
leave my tomatoes behind, and the mature apple tree and lemon trees? and
the wisteria? and the roses? and even my compost pile? (my husband threw
away the heavy plastic bags) Thankfully the person who bought our house
said he was a gardener. I gave him complete instructions about the various
plants and watering system, apple and lemon recipes etc. The house we
moved into (San Leandro) was acceptable only because there was room to
garden, a HUGE garden uphill and an big garden across the street. "These
are my people" I figured. When I introduced myself to the uphill neighbors
and told them how much I liked their garden, they said "Oh! Are you a
gardener? Can you tell us what these plants are?" Astonished, I pointed
out their iris, lilac etc and promised to come by for a complete tour. I
went over Sunday and found an INCREDIBLE garden - they bought the house for
the view and are total newcomers to the world of gardening. They have many
apple trees, apricot, cherry, plum, peach, fig, lemon, grapefruit,
tangerine, LOTS of lilacs and a vast array of roses. While they have
managed to keep most of it alive, many things look straggly as they reach
for sun amid overshadowing trees. Thankfully I had 2 copies of Sunset
Western Garden Guide so gave them one. I'm looking forward to helping them
learn to garden in exchange for some of their fruit (I love canning and
baking).

happy gardening to all
