Re: Blooming Albizia

Well, I asked the list earlier in the summer why my Albizia julibrissin
doesn't bloom.
This past week I have been judging gardens in an annual contest. This
is the first year that, among the entries, I came across blooming
Albizias - three trees in different locations, all in glorious bloom.
Then, in another garden, an Albizia just covered in little round green
buds, not yet blooming.

I noticed that the only thing different with each of these trees was
their maturity, the growing conditions, climate etc. not being a factor
I don't think. The trees with more advanced bloom had heftier trunks
and more substantial branches.

Then I came home and looked at my tree. In spite of its size, the trunk
is decidedly slender compared to the trees I saw and the branch system
rather spindly. Then, to my amazement, I saw some little green buds -
not many - to be honest, only a few.
So now I realize, because it is one of the last trees to leaf out in
spring, naturally it is going to bloom late in the season. Secondly,
the woody structure of the tree has to reach a certain maturity.

Now, if only my Chionanthus retusus (also very late to leaf out in
spring) would surprise me.
